ANTIGUA
Antigua's history is rife with the clash of empires, including the
French and the Dutch. Finally, the English settled here in 1632,
fortifying the island with battlements all along the shoreline and
constructing a major naval centre at English Harbour.
Horatio Nelson served as the head of the British naval command in
English Harbour. Nelson's Dockyard is the only remaining example of
its kind, showcasing the naval headquarters for the British fleet
during the 18th & 19th centuries.
For an island comprising only 108 square miles, Antigua hosts an
abundance of well preserved, beautifully restored historical sites
including the sugar mill at Betty's Hope, Tyrrell's Church, Nelson's
Dockyard museum, and St. John's Cathedral and museum.
